GARDENS OF LAZIO, ITALY
Sunday 14 - Friday 19 October 2018
The verdant hills and volcanic lakes just south-east of Rome have attracted Romans wanting to escape from the city for millennia. So the Castelli Romani, as the communes are known, are home to some of the most beautiful villas in Italy, with gorgeous gardens and grounds, and to the famous wine town of Frascati, the hilltop Castel Gandolfo, and the scenic Lago Albano.
Our group will stay at the elegant Villa Tuscolana Park Hotel, just outside Frascati. The villa was built by the Rufini family in 1700 on the ruins of the ancient home of Marcus Tulius Cicero. It has been renovated as a stately mansion.
For those arriving by air at Rome Ciampino airport, buses are frequent to the Ciampino town station and from there a direct train goes to Frascati in 14 minutes. There are trains from Rome Fiumicino airport into Rome Termini and, from there, you can take the train to Frascati. The hotel will meet guests at Frascati station. Alternatively MPG may – if there is sufficient demand – arrange a coach or minibus to meet members arriving at Rome’s Fiumicino airport. More information on the first day’s programme will be provided nearer the time.
The programme is expected to include visits to: Ninfa, Torrecchia, Villa d’Este, Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), Castel Gandolfo and Villa Landriana. There will also be a full day excursion to Viterbo, to see Villa Lante and the Sacro Bosco, Bomarzo. Christina Thompson, the guide for the tour, will give a short talk in the hotel before dinner on the evening before the visits to Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, and another on the evening before the visits to Villa Lante and the Sacro Bosco.
Almost all the gardens are on sloping ground of varying steepness and parts may be difficult or inaccessible for those with walking difficulties.
The cost of the trip is expected to be about £770 per person, with a single occupancy supplement of £136.
Transport during the tour, entrances, five nights’ accommodation, all dinners and four lunches are included.
If on one day it would be more convenient for members to have lunch independently a lunch allowance will be given to members.
This event is subject to alteration due to weather, personal circumstances of the guide, organiser or garden owners, and unexpected events which can't be controlled.
