Snowdrops and cyclamen in Devon

Sunday 6 February 2022

We are delighted to offer a private tour of members Jo and Tom Hynes garden near Dolton in Devon. Jo holds a National Collection of cyclamen, and this can be seen displayed in the greenhouses and in drifts with snowdrops and hellebores throughout the garden. Our Sunday visit will coincide with the Cyclamen Society Winter Show which is being staged at RHS Rosemoor on Saturday 5th, and also with Rosemoor’s Snowdrop Festival.

The morning will start at 10.30am at Rosemoor where we will be given a tour of the glasshouses and the Mediterranean Garden specialist with Susie Hauxwell. Susie will talk about the history of the garden and a typical year of maintenance. After lunch we go to Higher Cherubeer where Jo and Tom will give us a guided tour of their garden to see cyclamen, snowdrops (over 400 taxa), hellebores, crocuses, hepaticas and much more, followed by tea and cake.

Members wishing to make a weekend of their visit may choose to stay locally. You would need to arrange accommodation independently for this short visit. To help in this there are two local pubs with good restaurants that have limited room availability local to Jo and Toms garden, The Rams Head Inn at Dolton and The Duke of York at Iddesleigh. Likewise members can investigate on their own options and there are rooms at Rosemoor garden and a hotel nearby.

Unfortunately public transport to the area is very limited. The nearest national train station is Exeter then a local train which runs on the pretty Tarka line to Eggesford. You need to be aware that it will mean arriving the day before to ensure you can make the timings of the visit. Independent travel by car or cab will be needed for this trip. If members would like I can see if others who have cars are willing to offer limited lifts locally but nothing can be guaranteed (

The day will start at Rosemoor at 10.30 am, lunch will be in the garden at 12.00 and we will leave for Jo and Toms garden at 1.30. The days are shorter so we will need to make the most of the daylight to see the snowdrops and cyclamen in situ.

The cost for the day is £ 38 for NON RHS members and £25 for RHS members who must bring their membership card to gain entry.
