Erythronium dens-canis

Christopher Gardner, guide and leader

Plant hunting in Croatia

Saturday 22 to Saturday 29 April or Sunday 30 April to Sunday 7 May 2023

This spring expedition in Croatia will start in Dubrovnik and end in Zagreb, mainly studying the wild flora, but including sightseeing in the old part of Dubrovnik and a visit to the unusual botanic garden of a primary school. Some days will be in Mediterranean-climate areas near the sea and others in the Velebit highlands and Plitvice National Park. Transport will be in minibuses in order to access the most interesting wild plant sites.

Members will be looking for wild irises, orchids, fritillaries, cyclamen, anemones, and crocuses. The inland contrasts with the coast, being higher and cooler, with beech woods.

Good, comfortable three- and four-star hotels will be used, such as the Hotel Adria in Dubrovnik, in Makarska the Hotel Maritimo, and in Plitvice Hotel Degenija.

The botanical guides will be Chris Gardner and one other, both from ViraNatura. The trip will be more expensive than our usual tours, at approximately £1550 per person sharing a room, depending on exchange rates and fuel costs nearer the time. Single supplement estimate £300. Please contact Heather Martin if you want further details or have questions. Bookings are likely to open in September.
