Bere Mill garden tour followed by Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants
Tours, talks, lunch and refreshments: £64
Thursday 28 May 2026 – 11am start
Bere Mill and Gardens are owned by MPG members Rupert and Elizabeth Nabarro. The mill, rebuilt after a fire in 2018, lies on the famed River Test, east of Whitchurch, and was one of several in the region where bank notes were printed in the 18th century. The gardens, which Rupert will show us, have been created over 30 years with magnolia trees, bulbs, herbaceous and Mediterranean borders, irises and tree peonies. There are also two small arboretums, one specialising in Japanese planting, and a traditional orchard. Some of the surrounding fields form part of a renaturing project and the rest is now farmed by their daughter who raises traditional breeds of sheep and cattle. The Nabarros will give our visit fees to the National Garden Scheme.
Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants, barely a mile away, was founded in 1988 by Rosy and Rob Hardy and is one of the UK’s leading plantsman nurseries and the winner of 24 Chelsea Gold Medals. We will have a tour of the nursery and talk by Rosy on drought-tolerant and pollinator-friendly seasonal perennials, followed by a chance to buy plants. The nursery closes at 5pm.
Between visits a light lunch has been arranged at a nearby pub and refreshments will be offered at both the above locations. Trains from Waterloo run directly to Whitchurch and taxis are available for the short journey to Bere Mill.
