Winter visit to Kew Gardens
Thursday 30 November 2023
We will be led by experienced Kew guides and fellow MPG members Angela Fenhalls, Lynne Leveson and Anne Rendell through the best of Kew available to us in November, highlighting Mediterranean zones and trees. Weather permitting, we will visit and learn about the plans for development of the Mediterranean garden and see the young Winter Gardens. Members will also have the opportunity to visit the Marianne North Gallery where our guides will highlight some of the stunning artwork reflecting the plants and trees we will see during our visit.
Two special private visits have been arranged. Firstly, the Economic Botany Collection which holds around 100,000 objects from food to medicines, fuels, toys, weapons and materials. Most of them date back to the British Empire when they were collected or traded and each object relates to useful plants and is absolutely riveting. Our next optional visit is to Kew’s incredible Arboretum Nursery. This high-tech facility is where some of Kew’s 12,000 trees have been propagated using cutting-edge technology. As we walk between locations we will see some of the magnificent fully mature specimen trees in their winter magnificence.
Both of the special private tours are limited to 15 places and therefore, in the event of over subscription, will be allocated on a lottery basis to ensure that each interested member gets the chance of at least one tour, if possible. Full instruction of how to indicate your preference are on the booking form. For those not choosing to attend either tour alternative options will be available.
Members should be prepared for an early start (10.00), as the gardens close at 15.00 due to the winter lights event. Following the garden tour, we will adjourn for a late lunch at a local pub on Kew Green. There will be short breaks for tea/ coffee and cake during the tour but these are at members own cost and are not included in the pricing below.
Cost £19.00 – Garden and tour * reduction applicable for Kew members PLUS £24 pp if including lunch
* -Garden and tour cost. Members should note that Kew Gardens are, very generously, not charging MPG for our visit, guided tour or the two behind-the-scenes events, however, MPG has chosen to make an equivalent donation to Kew.
Any questions should be directed to denise.pawlett@outlook.com, the event organiser.
